Canyon Crest Elementary School

Canyon Crest Elementary has been awarded the highest level STEM designation this year from the Utah STEM Action Center. Earning the designation required significant work from teachers, administration, and staff to increase the degree of hands-on learning through robotics, coding, STEM labs, and other STEM experiences. It also involved an extensive self-assessment and a site visit from the STEM Action Center.

Suzy Cox, Director of Innovative Learning for the district, noted that “The work of everyone at Canyon Crest to earn this designation shows just how dedicated they are to helping all students learn the skills they will need for their futures.” We thank and applaud Principal Rene Cunningham, teachers, and staff of Canyon Crest Elementary for their extraordinary efforts in transforming Canyon Crest into a STEM-friendly school.

So how can classrooms and schools across the district implement more STEM-based activities that engage in deeper learning that doesn’t detract from the year’s scheduled curriculum?

Canyon Crest Elementary has an answer.

Once a week, all Canyon Crest students participate in hands-on, project-based STEM activities. Each room transforms into a unique mini-lab; from programming lessons on student-engineered bots to velocity-based units through marble-track coasters, Canyon Crest children see how STEM shapes the world around them through fun, engaging activities. It’s a sight to see.

Earning the designation required significant work from teachers, administration, and staff to increase the degree of hands-on learning through robotics, coding, STEM labs, and other STEM experiences. It also involved an extensive self-assessment and a site visit from the STEM Action Center.
