Canyon Crest Families,

1. Parent Survey & Kindness Club Information

I am very excited to only be at Canyon Crest this school year! As a school social worker I am here to support the students emotional, behavioral, or other needs. I am able to do this in a variety of ways. I do presentations in classrooms, hold groups with 4-6 students in the same grade to work on skills (friendship, coping, emotional regulation, etc.) as well as work with individuals. In order to work with students individually or in groups I need a permission form signed by a parent and I meet with the parent(s) to make sure we are working together to help their student. I am also involved in running the Hope Squad and a Kindness Club at the school. All students are welcome to join the Kindness Club and I’ll be talking with all the grades about this. Hope Squad is a peer nominated program and the students selected have already been notified. They serve as leadership and examples to the other students on being a good friend. Attached is a short survey to help me identify any students that may need some support so please take a few minutes to fill it out. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Canyon Crest Social Worker Parent Survey 2022-2023

Kindness Club will start in September and will be held on Fridays at 8. Students can pick up a permission form from the front office that needs to be filled out by a parent or guardian. I will be visiting the classrooms to talk about the Kindness Club over the next two weeks. There will be 3 different groups this year. First and second grade will meet on the second Friday of each month. Third and fourth grade will meet on the fourth Friday each month. Fifth and sixth grade will meet on the first and third Fridays each month and they will also be the Kindness Ambassadors. Kindness Ambassadors will  be involved in planning school wide activities. I will be using the app GroupMe to send out reminders the day before we meet. If you have any questions please let me know.

Thanks,

2. House Bill 162 – Period Products in Schools

In accordance and compliance with recent legislation (House Bill 162), our school will be offering free period products in our girls’ bathrooms. Within the coming months, donated period product dispensers will be installed, providing high-quality, organic, dignified products for our students. We will be posting the attached flyers in our girls’ bathrooms.  We invite parents/guardians to discuss the need for and proper use of period products with their children.

3. Update your students Parent Portal account

Provo City School District is asking that all families access their Parent Portal Account in powerschool to prepare for enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year, update the student’s information, review important policies and in order to access a district-provided computer device from our schools this year. If you have not done this step yet please do so BEFORE August 26th. Go to grades.provo.edu TO UPDATE YOUR DEMOGRAPHICS.

4. Free and Reduced Lunch Information

Don’t forget–Back to School Night is the perfect opportunity to sign up for classroom/school volunteering and for student lunches.

School breakfasts and lunches will not be offered for free to everyone this year.  Here is a reminder for what you need to do if you are interested in free and reduced lunches:

The federal government has indicated that school meals in 2022/2023 must be paid for unless parents/guardians have applied and been approved for the free and reduced meal program. Families who did not complete a free and reduced meal application for the 2021-2022 school year before May 27, 2022 will pay full price for meals during the first month of the 2022-2023 school year.

Please note that parents/guardians will need to complete a new meal application for the 2022-2023 school year as soon as possible for free and reduced meals.  If approved, the free and reduced meals will be in place for your child after the first month of this school year. For more information, see the current income eligibility guidelines.

You can find a free and reduced meal program application at the main office or apply online.

We ask that you please spread the word to anyone you know who may benefit from the free and reduced meal program.

5. SafeUT

SafeUT is a smartphone app that features a crisis chat and tip line to provide real-time crisis intervention and support for students and parents/guardians. You can learn more by going to the Safe UT website or by watching the video at the following link.  Our school social worker, Michael Blakey, will be speaking with 4th – 6th grade classes about the SafeUT app.  Please let Michael Blakey know if you have any questions ( michaelbl@provo.edu).

6. PTA Shirts & Yearbooks

Thank you to all who came to back to school night, and especially those who gave their time to help out that night. We couldn’t have done it without you!!

We have a limited stock of the Canyon Crest t-shirts still available for sale for $15! We would love for every student at Canyon Crest who wants one to be able to get one. You can pay for them with cash or a check to Canyon Crest PTA  in the main office, or if it would be a challenge for your family to pay for shirts, the PTA would love to provide a shirt for your child(ren) free of charge. The shirts are meant to promote school spirit, and we don’t want anyone to be left out! Please reach out to me, or Tiffany and Nancy in the front office and let’s get a shirt to every Canyon Crest student who wants one!! We currently still have a few shirts in all of the youth sizes, and a handful of adult sizes as well. We will keep the shirts in the front office until they are sold out. Check with Tiffany or Nancy if you have any questions about availability.

Some parents have been wondering about yearbook orders for this year. We will have a yearbook, but we won’t be taking orders until closer to the spring. We’ll let you know when it’s time! For anyone who didn’t get a yearbook last year, we do have a few copies left! Those are available for $10 each, also in the front office while supplies last.

Looking forward for other PTA events, Ariela Padilla is working on getting our Fall Festival underway. It’s a super fun family event that we’ll be holding the evening of Friday, September 23rd. Save the date and plan to attend! Anyone interested in helping prep or run the event, you can sign up to join the Fall Festival committee . Ariela will be reaching out soon to meet with the committee and get things going. September also has our Bike to School Week, and Canyon Crest needs a few more volunteers to help with Vision Screening on Thursday, September 15th. Keep checking back on our Sign Up Genius for volunteer opportunities throughout the year.

Also, our first PTA meeting will be Tuesday September 13th at 10:00 am. We’d love to have as many parents attend and participate as possible. You don’t have to be a PTA member to attend (you just have to be a member if you want to be  able to vote to approve the budget and whatnot). We will also have a feed of our meeting available on Facebook if you can’t attend in person, or that you can watch later if you want to stay apprised of what’s going on at Canyon Crest (we’ll send out link details as we get closer to the meeting).

I hope school is off to a great start so far for everyone’s kids! As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas of how we can help make Canyon Crest even better, please let me know!!
