This school year, your child will have the opportunity to participate in 5th Grade Maturation. Please see the following details about maturation instruction.

Date: Friday, December 6, 2024 Time: Maturation instruction will begin at 1:00pm Location:

• Boys – Room 21 (Chilcoat-Lyons)
• Girls – Room 23 (Campbell)
• Students Without Permission – Room 22 (Tortolero)

Maturation instruction consists of a Utah State Board of Education-approved 30-minute video shown to students. To grant or deny permission for maturation instruction, please complete and send back the state-approved permission form (see below). If you select “Option 2,” you will need to inform us of your decision to grant or deny permission by Monday, December 2.  Teachers will send a physical copy of the permission form home with students on Monday, November 18.

Please also note the following:

• Parents are welcome to attend maturation instruction if they are interested.
• Additionally, our teachers will facilitate a short in-class reception for students to celebrate completion of maturation instruction (for students who participate).
• In the past, teachers have been instructed to not answer any questions about maturation. Our district has now lifted those guidelines and has provided direction to teachers about how to answer questions. Responses to questions about maturation must be scientifically accurate, objective, brief, and concise. Responses must follow the Utah Core Standards, Utah State Law, and district guidelines (e.g., never discuss the mechanics of sex, maintaining the viewpoint of ‘abstinence before marriage and complete fidelity after marriage’, etc.). Responses must never involve personal habits/views. Our administrative team has directed teachers to only respond to questions if another district employee is present. Teachers will also remind students they can ask questions of and speak to a trusted adult.

Maturation permission forms must be completed and returned no later than Monday, December 2. Let your child’s teacher know if you have any questions.
