Canyon Crest Elementary School

Canyon Crest Parents/Guardians,

Elections for School Community Council will start on Tuesday, September 5.  In preparation of voting, please review the biographies of the candidates who have been nominated (alphabetical by last name).  We have three (3) positions available.

Ruth Burt

I graduated from high school with a 4.59 GPA, attended BYU as a National Merit Scholar, and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in history teaching. While attending BYU I served as the Vice President of the BYU College Republicans Club, and was an active member of the Cancer Awareness Group. I continue to value education and learning.

I am currently a part-time bookkeeper and full-time mother. At Canyon Crest, I served as PTA Treasurer for two years, and as the President for one. I am passionate about education and improving the experience for children, parents, & teachers.

I have been on the Community Council for Canyon Crest for the last two years, and would like to continue to do so because I want to see the dividend from the school trust lands be used efficiently and meaningfully. I am uniquely qualified for this position because I understand what it takes to succeed as a student, what it takes to succeed as a teacher, and I understand the stress of being a parent to students in the system. More than anything, I love my children and want the best experience possible for them and all kids at Canyon Crest.

Nelson Pace

Hello, my name is Nelson Pace, and I am excited to be considered for a position on Canyon Crest Elementary’s School Community Council. As a father of three children who attend the school, I am deeply committed to ensuring that every student has access to the best possible education and opportunities for growth.

I earned a Bachelors in Statistics at Brigham Young University, a Masters of Science from Harvard University; and a PhD in Epidemiology focused on pediatric health at the University of North Carolina (UNC). During my time at UNC, I had the opportunity to teach, tutor, and develop curriculum for students as a future faculty fellow. Currently, I work for a health science company developing cancer treatments for children and adults.

I am committed to bringing an open, welcoming, and inclusive perspective to the council, and I pledge to make recommendations and decisions that will help improve student learning outcomes and growth. If elected, I look forward to working with the council to encourage academic advancement and success for all students at Canyon Crest.

Thank you for considering me for a position on the School Community Council.

Kate Patterson

My name is Kate Patterson and I would love to serve on the School Community Council for a second term. My Ruthie is a third grader, my Alex is a first grader, and my Joanna is a future Canyon Crest Cub. I recently taught Business Writing for BYU-Idaho for five years and my husband, Rich, is an economics professor at BYU. We met at BYU and after living out of state for school and work we are thrilled that Provo is our home.

After finishing school, I worked for several years as the communications coordinator for a public school district. In that role I learned how valuable it is to have collaboration among administrators, teachers, and community members. I had a wonderful experience representing our parent community on the Community Council over the last two years and am eager to serve again and continue to support Canyon Crest.

Shane Wright

Hello, my name is Shane Wright.

I want to make sure ALL Canyon Crest students – English track and Dual Immersion track –  have the best support and the best learning outcomes possible.  As a previous Canyon Crest Community Council member, and with the support of the other members of the council, we have pushed for the Space Lab, the new STEM designation, equally strong English and Dual Immersion programs, 3D printer, school security, safer cross walks and much more.  I commit to make decisions that will help improve the outcomes of your children and mine.

I received my Bachelors in Communication from BYU and my Masters degree from the BYU Marriott School of Management. I have worked at BYU for 22 years at Performing Arts Management and currently serve as Director. I have also served on the Timpview High School Community Council.

I promise to bring my experience and knowledge to continue to improve the quality of our kids’ educational experience at Canyon Crest.  Go Cubs!
