Inclement Weather Procedures
We are entering the time of year where there is a chance that morning weather may impact teachers and students in getting to school on time.
The following are our established procedures for determining the impact of weather on travel and start times. Please note that the district has maintained the option for a Remote (At Home) Learning Day (details follow below). On these days, buildings will be closed and students should stay at home.
For accurate information when you wake up in the morning, the district will post info on its website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages. Information will also be shared with local media. If you see nothing posted, please assume that school will follow its normal schedule.
Please remember that different areas of Provo may receive very different impacts of the weather. The decisions made are as an entire district, with the exception of some transportation changes, if the weather so dictates.
Decision Process
8:45 p.m. the night before a known incoming storm – District officials will determine if designated drivers will be sent out the following morning to assess road conditions. This decision will be made by 8:45 PM so we can notify those that are willing to assess conditions before they go to bed.
4:45-5:00 a.m. – Assigned drivers will begin driving roads to assess conditions and report back to District officials.
5:00-5:15 a.m. – District Transportation Department contacts Provo City to receive their assessment of road conditions.
5:10 a.m. – Designated drivers and the Transportation Department will contact the Business Administrator and the Superintendent via text or phone call with an assessment from their crews on the road conditions. These crews will also focus on the ability of district facility employees to maintain clear walks and parking lots at schools.
5:20 a.m. – District officials discuss the reported assessments and make a determination if any possible closures or transportation route adjustments are needed/recommended.
5:30 a.m. – The final decision is relayed to the District Transportation and Communications offices. The Communication Department begins to make any necessary communication to stakeholders by 5:45 a.m. per Policy 6607 P1.
Possible Decisions
Below Bench Pick-up
If the roads have not been plowed, or the snow accumulation on the road is too deep, or the roads are iced over, the school buses will pick up at the following stops. Please send students to the below bench pickup stop in your area as close to the regular stop time as possible. (Once the decision has been made for these pickups, all regular education routes will adhere to them even if the streets have been plowed after the decision has been made.)

Remote (At Home) learning day
This means all Provo City School District schools will utilize at-home learning options. All district buildings will be closed and students should remain at home on these days. District officials will notify teachers to be prepared for this option to ensure that students take home devices when inclement weather is expected. All other scheduled activities will be canceled, including practices. District administrative office staff and school administrators are expected to either report to work as soon as safely possible or utilize telecommuting options if work responsibilities allow (in coordination with their supervisor). If an at-home learning day is called, all extracurricular after-school programs, including practices, will be canceled.
Schools Closed
With the option of Remote (At Home) learning, school will not be canceled. Learning will continue at home. All scheduled activities, including practices, would be canceled. District administrative office staff and school administrators are expected to either report to work as soon as safely possible or utilize telecommuting options if work responsibilities allow.
2-hour late start
For a two-hour late start, buses will begin their first route two hours late but at regularly scheduled stops UNLESS the message includes “With below Bench Pick-up”. There will be NO half-day kindergarten, preschool, or other midday/after-school programs.
Early Release
In the event weather becomes a concern during the school day and an early release is determined to be in the best interest of the students, the Communications office shall be notified and will send out the appropriate communications.
