Next week, February 12 through 16 is White Ribbon Week, a week dedicated to helping children become safe online through media literacy.  White Ribbon Week is a great opportunity for children to learn skills that help them avoid harmful media and use technology for good. As part of our White Ribbon Week, students will engage in the following:

Lunch recess activities that promote media literacy, internet safety, and living a balanced life (e.g., learning games to play instead of being on devices, learning to be kind online, knowing who you’re talking to online, etc.). In-class internet safety lesson for grades K-6 on Tuesday, February 13. Whole school internet safety assembly presented by NetPositive.  

At Canyon Crest, we feel it is important to equip students with the skills they need to be effective stewards of electronic devices throughout the school year.  In addition to our White Ribbon Week activities, throughout the year students receive internet safety lessons, ROAR (respect, ownership, attitude, responsibility) lessons on media literacy, instruction from teachers on district- and school-wide technology expectations.

We are grateful to our PTA, School Community Council, and Safety Committee who have helped with planning our White Ribbon Week.

We invite all parents to get involved with teaching their children media literacy and internet safety.  Our efforts at school, including White Ribbon Week, will only be as effective as the instruction and expectation in the home.

Provo City School District’s technology department recommends the following:

1. Parents are encouraged to work with their internet service provider and mobile vendor to learn about parent control options.
