Provo City School District

Canyon Crest Elementary School

We were so happy to get a visit from our dear friends Christine Durst and her son Sam.  Christine used to be our librarian at Canyon Crest and Sam, a former student, was always a great helper and so fun to have around.  Christine and Sam came to share a very important message about how just because someone may look different, we are all the same on the inside.  Sam has a condition called Cerebral Palsy which effects the control that he has over his body.  His condition only effects his body, not his mind.  Sam is fun and funny and wonderful to have a conversation with. Some of our students were able to see what it would be like to have restrictions, such as – not being able to see, not having the use of their hands, or not being able to hear.  Even though Sam doesn’t have the use of his arms or legs, he is still able to ski, to do the dirty dash race, etc. He just does those things in a different way.  Sam just hiked Delicate Arch in an off-road wheelchair by Extreme Motus.  To see the story click here.  Sam volunteers in many ways in the community to help and serve others.  We loved learning from Sam that everyone matters, no matter what their abilities are.  Everyone has feelings, is important and has so much to offer to those around them.  Thanks you Christine and Sam!  We love you!
