If your student has enjoyed free breakfasts and lunches through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “Free Meals” extension through the 2021-2022 school year, take note– Congress has opted not to fund USDA-financed free breakfasts & lunches in the upcoming 2022-2023 school year.

To prevent sudden charges at the beginning of next year, your student must sign up for the Free / Reduced Meals Program option before the cutoff date of May 30, 2022. Otherwise, you could unknowingly end up with hefty lunch charges, or worse, lose out on possible PEBT (Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer) benefits– here’s why.

Historically, the Free and Reduced Meals program included a 30-day window starting the first day of school for students to eat free without a charge for their meal. The 30-day window is only available for students registered for the previous year’s Free and Reduced Meals program. Unregistered students expecting Free and Reduced Meals through the USDA Free Meals extension will take on any charges for meals purchased during that 30-day window.

Families could end up paying for a month’s worth of lunches & breakfasts per student.

For those eligible for PEBT funding, please note that the Federal Government uses the Free / Reduced Meals registry to distribute funds. If your student is not registered for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program, the Federal Government will not offer you the PEBT funding.

Sign up for the Free and Reduced Lunch option now before May 30, 2022, and please share this news with your friends and family.
