Canyon Crest Elementary School

Dear Canyon Crest Families,

Welcome back to 2020, and the second half of the school year! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break and we are happy all our families are back safely from their holiday travels. It has been quiet at the school except for many of our diligent and dedicated teachers sneaking in to prepare for the return of their students.

We had a great first half of our school year, and anticipate that the second part of the year will be even better! As I have previously mentioned, our teachers will be engaging in STEM training and utilizing their skills with students in the classrooms. Our Space Lab will be up and running this month, and we appreciate the hard work of district personnel, Canyon Crest parents, and our STEM Coordinator, Megan Christensen, for making this happen so quickly. Be watching for information coming for parent Space Lab missions, and STEM community nights. We are excited for these new STEM opportunities coming our way!

We completed our Middle-of-the-Year DIBELS (English Language Arts) testing in December and are happy to announce that most of our students have made good progress for the first half of the year in Language Arts. We will be sharing information about your students’ progress during SEPs and in our upcoming school communication.  Teachers and support teams will continue working hard to ensure increased student progress by the end of the school year.

Our attendance remained steady in the month of December in spite of the cold and flu season barreling on top of us. We encourage the attendance of every student when at all possible, but if students are ill please keep them at home for the recommended 72 hours of recovery to prevent the spreading of flu germs to other students. We will be doing lots of hand washing in the classrooms to prevent illness.

We have another fun community event coming up this month on Wednesday, January 22nd, of dinner at The Habit in Provo.  This, again, will be a fundraiser to help supply STEM training and robotic materials for grade levels, but much more than that, an opportunity for our families to get together for dinner. Students love seeing other class members, teachers, and school administration in a different setting outside of the school day. The Habit restaurant will donate 20% of proceeds from Canyon Crest patrons to the school. Please note that drive up window and to-go orders will also be honored. Just let then know you are from Canyon Crest. Please come and join us for dinner on January 22nd!

With winter days upon us, please watch for information for possible late start or snow days.  A weather related announcement could range from transportation adjustments to starting late, to even closure (rare but possible). The district will try to make such announcements, if needed, by 5:30 a.m. on the day of, and we will communicate that to our parents as quickly as possible.

Families, thank you for your contribution to a great school year, thus far. I appreciate your communication and those who have come to voice concerns, suggestions, and possible solutions. We have a wonderful school community and I feel blessed to, again, be part of Canyon Crest. Please know my door is always open. Together we can make big differences in the lives of our students and children. Thanks for being part of a great team effort!
