Dear Canyon Crest Families,
As we move forward this summer in planning for our upcoming school year, we want to keep you informed of the GREAT things planned for our students at Canyon Crest. Although, at this particular moment, we don’t know what the beginning of the school year will look like exactly, we will also keep you informed as new information comes our way from State and District levels. We anticipate that we will have full programs and curriculum for our students to come back to and have begun planning for a strong beginning to the 2020-2021 school year.
We were disappointed that many of the goals and programs we were working on got cut short this past year due to COVID-19, but we are excited to get back running in the same direction! Our teachers are never idle and are continuing summer programs to enhance their curriculum. We have a new Science Core for most grade levels, and a new math implementation, Into Math (from the same company as Go Math), in which teachers are receiving training. We will be continuing STEAM training this next year to move toward our STEAM School Designation, planning our Space Lab missions for students, implementing coding and programming classes and Jr. Achievement courses in grades K-6, as well as continuing to provide a well-rounded education for all students in both Traditional and DLI programs at our school. We have a lot to be excited about! We have a few new teachers and interns we would like to introduce you to, so that students can be familiar with their teachers as they receive their class assignments this summer.
Veronica Rascon – 1st grade DLI Spanish Teacher
My name is Veronica Rascon, I was born in Mexico in the city of Chihuahua. When I was six years old my family moved to Heber City, Utah and there began my love of learning. I graduated from Wasatch High school in 2015 and I stated at UVU in the fall of 2015. I was a bit unsure what career path I would follow but after several tutoring opportunities in Provo and Alpine school district, as well as my own experiences with amazing teachers in Wasatch county as a kid, I ended up applying to the Elementary Education program. I graduated from UVU Spring of 2019 with my Bachelors in Elementary Education and I got Married in the Fall of 2019, it was definitely an exciting year. One of the reasons I chose to become a teacher is because I love learning and as a teacher you are a life long learner. I love getting the opportunity to teach, because when information is presented correctly to a child it can be so exciting and fun for both the student and the teacher. Children are naturally curious and amazing teachers, and it’s fun to be surrounded by actively curious minds.
Kelsey Hunt (Intern) – 2nd grade DLI English Teacher
Hi! I’m Kelsey Hunt and I’m your new 2nd grade teacher! I am so excited to get to teach at Canyon Crest in the upcoming school year! I love teaching and learning, my favorite subject is history and I love to read. I’ve lived here in Utah pretty much my whole life and have loved it! In high school I played the flute and music is one of my hobbies now. I can’t wait for the school year to start and to begin working with your students!
Victoria Hyer – 4th grade DLI English Teacher
Hello! My name is Tori Hyer, and I am so excited to get to know the Canyon Crest community as I join the fourth grade team this year. My favorite thing about being a teacher is getting to know my students, and sparking excitement with them about learning. I hope that I can share that love of learning with each of you, and grow together this year!
Gioia Johnson – 4th grade DLI Spanish Teacher
Hi, my name is Gioia Johnson. This will be my second year teaching 4th grade. I graduated from UVU recently, and I live in Pleasant Grove with my husband and 6 year old son. I grew up in San Diego, and now call Utah home. I also have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from BYU. I love to travel and have lived, and taught ESL in Mexico, Spain, and Uruguay. I can’t wait to meet everyone.
Liza Birkinshaw (Intern) – 5th grade Traditional class
My name is Liza Birkinshaw. I’m from Sandy, but I’ve lived in Provo for the past few years while studying elementary education at Utah Valley University. I served an LDS mission in Portland, Oregon and had the opportunity to learn Spanish. I love being outside and especially love the mountains. Some of my favorite things to do include, running, hiking, and reading. I come from a big family and love spending time with my six older siblings and their cute kids. Ever since I started toward my goal of teaching elementary school, I have always wanted to teach 5th grade and I’m thrilled to be able to start my career in this grade!
A few more changes:
Mrs. Helquist will be teaching the 1st grade Traditional class this year,
Mrs. Nelson will be teaching the 1st grade DLI English class,
