May Principal’s Message As the 2021-22 school year is winding down, I want to first thank our wonderful Canyon Crest staff for their devotion and perseverance in teaching the children of this...
Look at what’s around the Corner at Canyon Crest! . . . .
We are so excited to finally get back to normal and start utilizing all the great things we had prepared and begun implementing during the Spring of 2020. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we were shut down; but we are back on our feet and ready to start stronger than ever in the 2021-22 school year! Here are a few things our students can look forward to at Canyon Crest as we begin our new school year:
Junior Achievement – We were excited and proud to announce the introduction of the Junior Achievement Program to Canyon Crest back during the 2019-20 school year. Now that Covid is behind us, we are excited to re-introduce this awesome program. As a reminder, Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization dedicated to giving students from Kindergarten through High School the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices. The JA program provides relevant, hands-on experiences in financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship for students. We are excited to have Canyon Crest participate in this program which will give our students educational opportunities in preparing for real-world financial experiences. We’d like to thank Brad Hagen, one of our wonderful new parents, for generously coordinating the program this upcoming school year. If you are interested being a parent volunteer to help in the presentation of classroom lessons (and Dads, we need YOU, too!), please contact Brad. More information to come on how you can help participate. . . .
STEM – Our teachers completed the district and state code.org training as scheduled in March 2020. We will be reviewing, as grade level teams, the different programmable options that teachers have to use with their students. This is an important step for our school in helping us become more STEM prepared and trained to help our students learn coding and programming skills for future school and employment opportunities. We so much want to thank our parent donors in the past for their generous school donations to help make the purchase of programmables possible for our students. Our Summer School students have been able to learn and use some of these great resources this summer.
We will be hiring a STEM Coordinator before the beginning of school to work with students during the school day, in conjunction with Mrs. Hatton’s missions in the Space Lab. Our Canyon Crest science programs are “out of this world’!
Introduction of our new Teachers – Each year we work with two new Interns from Utah Valley University. This gives these teachers an opportunity to work with their grade level teams, our facilitator, Mrs. Olsen, and University personnel to gain strong skills as teachers. They have worked with Canyon Crest teachers and students last Spring, and are excited to begin the new school year. Chloe Palmer will be working in our second grade English DLI class this year, and Alicia Wallentine will be our fifth grade Traditional teacher. We are so excited to have them on board with us!
We are sad to say goodbye to two great teachers – Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Hyer, our kindergarten and fourth grade teachers. They are leaving the state with their husbands who are pursuing their careers. Two other changes to our staff are Ang Johnson, our wonderful social worker who is being transferred to another location in the district, and Kim Williams, our awesome custodian who is taking another position at BYU. We will announce their replacements in the upcoming weeks.
We hope you are having a wonderful summer. We miss our Canyon Crest students, but will be ready to start a great new year in August!
